Brave Forever by Sonia Guity

My students always said: She is a good presenter! she can speak in public and she never feels nervous, she looks quiet and secure of herself but everyone knew the true history about my change. My friends told me You are the best presenting !, Change is important because we make a better person so to require many things, hours in practice and brave for wake in front a group of person,  maybe laughed me. I remember when I turned into a good presenter, day after day, I spoke a lot with everyone and I never stopped to reflect upon this. One day a student at CIIE asked me about this and I decided to tell him how to turn into a good presenter.

In 1990 I was in a first grade of normal education at Normal Mixta Pedro Nufio. My classmates and I were learning about pedagogic history, education and skills to be a teacher. My pedagogic teacher was very angry and formal for everything. My classmates and I were afraid because students of next grades had said how the teacher called strong the attention when a student could not make an assignment or homework in her class.  It was a sunny day on March 24th, the weather was very hot because summer was coming, the pedagogic teacher explained about a special assignment that was to prepare an exposition about a specific topic to bring to her. In my case, I was going to explain about Schools of Education, She explained many details about a way to research in different libraries, in this time, I couldn’t access the Internet, and so a library was the only way for research. The pedagogic teacher made emphasis in how to prepare an exposition in 4 steps: one step, research about a topic in many bibliographical sources, second step, study very hard leaning chips, third step, test in front of a mirror house because it was necessary   you looked at your face, and movement of your arms, how to stop, your eye contact with the audience, etc. I felt dread because I was very introverted and never could talk in front my classmates, I felt nervous, I wanted to vomit, I felt dizziness and I needed to run and so I ran and never stopped. Fourth step, I made an exposition in front of my classmates and her.

My fear increased day after day because my classmates began a presentation and a pedagogic teacher, said many hard comments about the way they presented, the main comment was they did not study for an activity and when they stopped a classmate felt hesitated, looked at the ceiling or the floor, rubbed hands and read a note, the pedagogic teacher explained again about how important it is to study for this. I thought the best way to make a good presentation was hard study but I felt was essential too adopted a relaxed and safe position when I step up in front my classmates. I read a story about Demosthenes, a great Greek speaker, He achieved his stammering, because of practicing day after day in front of a lake or mirror, He managed to become in the best speaker. This story I had motivated for to convert in a good exhibition.

A day of presentations, my pedagogic teacher said:  “Sonia is your turn!” I stood up from my chair, I walked very slowly and I started to explain my topic. My pedagogic teacher looked at me with more attention and laughed sometimes, I felt nervous but I remember a Demosthenes story, I made many mistakes but my teacher said, she is a good presenter and She will convert in the best! I cannot believe that, breathe many times and I started believed me, a works of my teacher and the Demosthenes story were a key to my conversion.

After the event, I participated in many expositions about different topics, my pedagogic teacher always told me the sweet and motivation words.  The next year, other teacher asked me about a possibility of giving a class of didactic to my classmates when she traveled to Mexico. I accepted an offer and I had understood the value and importance of a teacher.  Today I love my career of teacher and sometimes I remember at the beginning the way of conversion in a good exhibiting, when my students or colleagues ask me  about the specific skill, I had always smiled because many people think the skills for teaching are innate, I think the skills are nurtured.  Speak in front your classmate for example, you had learned to teach in your professional life, a class at UPN to prepare for many things and give knowledge but the skills you only learn in real life, like me.
